(WFLX) - Thousands of Florida residents may now qualify for some cool cash in exchange for their old air conditioning units. It's a new statewide rebate program.
Florida recently offered a cash for clunkers rebate for people who bought a new refrigerator or another appliance.
Now, the state is offering a rebate for people who go out and replace the A/C system in their house.
The state has $15 million air conditioner rebates. That's enough to give rebates to 10,000 Florida residents.
All you have to do is install a new A/C system in your home, and then have your ducts tested to see if they're leaking. Those tests can cost about $300.
If your ducts pass the test, the state will give you $1,500 back.
But it appears there could be a bottleneck because there are only a few people in South Florida who are qualified to do the duct testing. In fact, there are only four or five of these testers in Palm Beach County, so you might have to wait a while.
"When you're doing all these replacements, you've got to have someone that does the testing with you, right beside you basically to be able to qualify, to make sure that the funds are available. So I think the bottleneck will be there," said John C. Cassidy Jr., of John C. Cassidy.
Cassidy feels the state should've set aside more money for the air conditioner rebates.
He thinks the money could be all gone in a month.
And they need more qualified testers, so there's not a logjam while people are waiting to get their ducts tested.
