Lionfish shootout: Kill & eat

Posted by Rachel Leigh - email

DEERFIELD BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Captain Tony Coulter and a group of divers are doing their part to kill off the lionfish population. The group set out this past weekend for a "lionfish shootout".

The fishermen headed to Deerfield Beach where there were a lot of the invasive lionfish species. Their goal was to kill as many as possible.

After the boat came home, everyone held a cookout and ate the lionfish. They are poisonous, but when cooked correctly, they're safe to eat.

The non-native fish are becoming a problem in our area. Wildlife experts say they destroy local marine life by eating pretty much anything in site.
