Sandoway Nature Center

The Sandoway House Nature Center is located in a historic 1936 beachfront home in Delray Beach, Florida. The house is on the National Register of Historic Places and preserved as a unique Nature Center now home to native plants, live animals, and a world class shell collection (Map).

The Center offers a glimpse into South Florida's fragile marine and freshwater environments through educational exhibits and programs.

Educational programs are offered to the public at Sandoway House including: Shark Feedings, Guided Historic Tours, Nature Walks, Astronomy Nights, Summer Camp and special events such as Earth Day.

We host guest speakers on environmental topics and teach exciting nature programs to all ages!

Adopt an Animal (1 Year)

You can make a difference for animals by adopting one of our feathery, scaly or shelled friends at the Nature Center. The animals you adopt will live at Sandoway House and be cared for by staff where you can visit them at the Nature Center!

Turtle Talk Tuesday's
Tuesday's starting June 15 and ongoing - 2 pm
Visit the Nature Center and learn all about the four species of turtles & tortoises that call Sandoway House home. Learn all about their habitat, what they eat, what entertains them, scares them and when they sleep. Meet Speedy – Florida's endangered Gopher Tortoise, GiGi a Florida Box Turtle, a Red-bellied Pond Turtle and a Razor-backed Musk Turtle. Admission is only $4 per person for everyone age 3 and up; free for members. Admission includes all other marine and fresh water exhibits and entrance to see one of Florida's largest public shell collections.

Garden Walk Wednesday's
Wednesday's starting June 16 and ongoing - 2 pm
Walk through the native butterfly garden at the historic home adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean. The leisurely walk includes identification and information on dozens of native Florida plants. Learn what types of plants butterflies like so you can attract them to your home. Admission is only $4 per person for everyone age 3 and up; free for members. Admission includes all other marine and fresh water exhibits and entrance to see one of Florida's largest public shell collections.

Inside and Outside of Shells
Thursday's starting June 17 and ongoing - 2 pm
Learn and investigate the inside and outside of different types of shells from one of the largest shell collections in Florida from a resident conchologist. Kids can see and touch several living mollusks including the Horse Conch, Florida's State Shell. This exciting activity also includes a dissection of a large squid. Admission is only $4 per person for everyone age 3 and up; free for members. Admission includes all other marine and fresh water exhibits.

Fossil Fridays
Friday's starting June 18 and ongoing - 2 pm Learn about Florida's fossil history and see up close and touch dozens of fossils from around the state. See fossils from sharks, rays, mastodons, mammoths, turtles, tortoises and more. Each participant can take home their own genuine Florida fossil. Admission is only $4 per person for everyone age 3 and up; free for members. Admission includes all other marine and fresh water exhibits and entrance to see one of Florida's largest public shell collections.

Snake and Lizard Talk
Saturday's starting June 19 and ongoing - 2 pm
Talk, touch and feel reptiles that call Florida home. Learn the difference between a native and invasive reptiles and see examples of both. Discover what they eat and where they would be found in the wild. Admission is only $4 per person for everyone age 3 and up; free for members. Admission includes all other marine and fresh water exhibits and entrance to see one of Florida's largest public shell collections.

Coral Reef Shark Feedings
Tuesday through Saturday 10:30 am
Sunday at 1:30 pm

Join us for a splashing good time and discover what Atlantic Ocean Reef Fish and Nurse Sharks eat for breakfast! Admission is only $4 per person for everyone age 3 and up; free for members. Admission includes all other marine and fresh water exhibits and entrance to see one of Florida's largest public shell collections.

Group Education Programs
Call to schedule your group's adventure today! We welcome school and special interest groups of all ages and offer fun learning experiences specially adapted to your group.

Programs may include a shark feed, live animal encounters and a tour of Sandoway House's gardens, animal exhibits and aquariums. Programs for school groups K-12 are developed to meet the Florida Sunshine State Standards. For more information and to schedule your group's visit please call 274-SAND.
