Whale cut in half after washing ashore in Delray

DELRAY BEACH, FL (WFLX) - A fisherman cuts the back end of a pigmy sperm whale off after it washed ashore Thursday morning on Delray Beach.

According to our partners at the "Palm Beach Post", Chris Hogan, who was fishing at dawn for blue crab, says that an 8-foot whale had come ashore with the high tide.

Published reports state that he "calmly walked over and cut off the last two feet of it -- tail and all".

When asked why, reports show Hogan claimed he wanted to eat the whale and did not know that was illegal until a lifeguard informed him. Whales are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

It's not clear why the whale washed up on the beach; although, marine experts say they did identify a bump on the whale's head.

Hogan was taken to police headquarters.

Another whale came ashore Thursday in Jensen Beach. Beach-goers discovered the pygmy whale around 10 a.m. near Jensen Sea Turtle Beach. They tried to rescue it by pouring buckets of water onto the whale, but were unsuccessful. A necropsy will now be performed.
