Mountain Bike Trails

True, single-track, off-road bicycle trails are available for public use at three locations. Riders are required to use appropriate types of equipment, including a sturdy, "fat tire" bicycle and mandatory helmet; water bottle is recommended.

Lake Trail, Palm Beach, Length: 9 Miles
In only a few places in the world would the nickname of this trail be an understatement, and Palm Beach, Florida, is one of them. The approximately nine miles of out-and-back along the ritzy intracoastal waterway near Lake Worth attracts all sorts to ride its golf-cart width of asphalt. The trail still makes those same turns near the museum shaded by buttonwood, Christmas palm, and other native species. One of those, the gumbo limbo, is also called the "tourist tree" for its red, peeling bark. Lake Trail is a popular site not only for bikers, but for walkers, joggers, and in-line skaters.

Dyer Park, Length: 2 Miles
This former landfill has been developed into a county park where a paved asphalt loop (approximately ten feet wide) goes around one of the filled cells; in addition, some true off-road singletrack of perhaps a two-mile loop will be constructed in partnership with the West Palm Beach Bicycle Club. The property was given to the Department of Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation by the Solid Waste Authority. a BMX track and horse trails are also in the works for this east coast urban park.

John Prince Park, Length: 4.5 miles
At Congress Avenue and Sixth Avenue South in Lake Worth (adjacent to Palm Beach Junior College): This 727-acre park includes a five-mile paved bicycle path that takes you around scenic Lake Osborne. Before or after your ride, you'll find plenty of other activities within the park, including batting cages, miniature golf, tennis courts, sailboat rentals and lots of picnic site.

Okeeheelee Park
, Length: 8 miles
7715 Forest Hill Blvd. (Forest Hill Boulevard at the turnpike), West Palm Beach: "A very good place to go with children," Phillips says. You can explore this 900-acre park on a six-mile paved bike path that winds around the lake past nature trails, picnic areas and the equestrian complex. The park also offers a separate BMX bicycle track. Plus you'll find a nature center, tennis and racquetball courts, fishing, athletic fields and a competitive water skiing are.
