Snorkeler hit by boat off Boca Inlet

BOCA RATON, FL (WFLX) - A snorkeler is in critical condition after being struck by a boat Sunday afternoon.

According to Boca Raton Police, 22-year-old John Deleonibus was snorkeling about 50 to 75 yards off South Inlet Park, just south of the Boca Inlet, when he was struck by a boat at about 4:05 p.m. Sunday.

Witnesses told officers a white boat, about 25 feet long with a blue stripe, struck the Lynn University student and continued traveling south toward Deerfield Beach.

Witnesses described the boat as having a center console and twin white Evinrude E-Tec motors. Between four and six people were onboard including the operator of the boat -- a heavy-set white male.

"We saw the boat come flying through, and he didn't even pay attention that there was a dive flag in the water and just kept going," said eyewitness Connie Maxey. "The boat just came out of the inlet, heading south towards Deerfield Beach too fast and didn't even pay attention to the diving flag that was in the water," she added.

The victim sustained serious injuries and was transported to the Delray Beach Medical Center.

If anyone witnessed this crime or has information about the suspect boat, they are asked to call Officer Ghenz Kosova at (561) 620-6057 or Palm Beach County Crime Stoppers at (800) 458-TIPS.
