Gardens' Gators in midst of identity crisis

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL (WFLX) - They've been known as the Garden's Gators since 1969, but now the Palm Beach Gardens school is in the midst of a major identity crisis -- forced to get rid of its familiar logo.

Already, Palm Beach Gardens Community High School is starting to erase any signs showing its Gator logo; however, student athletes say they are trying to hold on to their identity as a school.

"Now that I know that we have to change it, it's kind of meaningless. The school's not going to be the same any more," said junior John Marra.

A licensing company, hired by several universities including the University of Florida, has started cracking down on high schools using the logos of colleges.

Athletes and students have worn a logo similar to the one worn by the Gators in Gainesville for decades, but they've been told they can't any more.

Principal Larry Clawson says school district attorneys are looking into the issue, but, in the meantime, the school has also removed the logo from its Web site.

Future uniforms will exclude any likeness of the University of Florida's Gator logo, and the school is looking at exactly how much it's going to cost to replace all their existing logos with a new one. They say it won't be easy at the brand new school nor inexpensive.

The school is currently working on a new logo -- taking ideas from students and their art department on campus.

The school's not exactly sure how long it's going to take to iron all this out.
