GREENACRES, FL (WFLX) - An 8-year-old boy was hit and killed by a truck while biking home from school with his father. The father could only watch as his son, Liam Rojas, was killed just feet away from him.
It happened Wednesday afternoon near Pine Jog Elementary School.
Liam Rojas's friend, Nick, brought his buddy one last gift, a little car. It was just after school let out at Pine Jog Elementary.
Greenacres police say Liam and his dad were riding their bikes home when a delivery truck pulled out onto Jog Road. The third grader died at the scene. "It was clear. Then, after I made the U-turn, the child had been injured, and it happened in a split second," said Kevin Gonzalez.
Gonzalez saw the accident. "I called 911 to render whatever assistance I could to have the police come, but, by the time police came, it was too late."
The truck belongs to Recover Care, a company that rents out healthcare equipment.
Neighbors in the area say this intersection is a tough one. "It's hard to see cars and especially children on bikes."
Liam's father was unharmed. His mother, briefed at the scene by police on what happened, was too distraught to talk.
Rodrigo Ortegon says he is the father's boss. He says Luis Rojas called him with the news and was uncontrollably sobbing.
Some notes about the little boy left at the scene say he was funny, goofy, loved to mixed up his school lunches, and always was nice to everyone.
No word on any charges for the truck driver. Police are investigating whether there were any traffic violations.
