BOYNTON BEACH, FL --- One man is killed after a shooting in Boynton Beach early Thursday morning.

The Palm Beach Sheriff's Office received a call about a suspicious person in a 2006 red four-door Volkswagen in the back of the Gables End Plaza on Winward Passage Drive at about 6 a.m.

When Deputy Timothy Rieger arrived at the scene to check out the suspicious vehicle, a confrontation occurred.

At this time, it appears as though Rieger feared for his life and discharged his service weapon, striking a 40-year-old David Bennett.

Shortly after, backup arrived at the scene.

Rieger allegedly shot the suspicious man before they arrived.

At this time, it is not known how many shots were fired.

The man who was killed has a violent past.

He is a multi-state felon arrested for robberies, burglaries, vandalism, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and people.

Deputies are in the process of notifying his family.

The suspicious car was stolen and involved in a hit and run two days ago.

Investigators don't know if the dead mean stole the car or if he just happened to come across it.

The dead man was born in 1970 and his last known address was in Jupiter.

Rieger is currently on administrative leave with pay, which is standard protocol.

He has been a deputy with PBSO since July 15, 2008.
