WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - The Palm Beach County school system is budgeting money to pay a pricy penalty to the state instead of staffing classrooms with more teachers.
The state of Florida has fined the school system $7 million because it has not complied with new standards for classroom sizes.
To meet the requirement, it would have had to come up with $59 million extra to fund 900 new teachers.
In these tight budget times, district officials say, they have no choice but to be penalized.
Some critics say the district should have done more financial planning since the law was passed in 2002.
