KEY LARGO, FL (WFLX) - Divers in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary have begun their so-called "lionfish derbies".
It's an effort to reduce the population of the invasive and poisonous fish. The first of three derbies this weekend attracted more than 100 participants competing for cash and prizes.
Lionfish have no known predators, except man, and they are eating up important native reef fish, like grouper and snapper.
• Oct. 16 – Keys Fisheries Market and Marina, Marathon
• Nov. 13 — Hurricane Hole Marina, Key West
