Today marks the 82nd anniversary of a deadly hurricane that hit our area.

The 1928 hurricane and its victims were remembered at Port Mayaca Memorial Gardens.

A nearby cemetery is the site of a mass grave where 1,600 hurricane victims are buried.

On hand for today's service, was a survivor of the '28 storm who was just 3 at the time.

"But I remember how the little house we lived in was torn down," said Ethel Williams.

"Lost everything. Had nobody but the Lord," she added.

In addition to the mass grave at Port Mayaca, there were also mass burials in West Palm Beach.

More than 2,000 people lost their lives in the 1928 hurricane, making it the second deadliest natural disaster in U-S history.
