Exercise & Injury

I'm Dr. David Vastola and Patrick and I have many fond memories of this place. My daughter Lizzie played varsity softball here for four years at Cardinal Newman and it brings back those experiences. We're lucky living in Florida because our kids can play outside in facilities like this year round, but there's a problem, especially with the girls. Let me show you.

We now know that girls who play sports have anatomic weaknesses of their knees that the boys don't have. It's because the angle of the femur that goes into the knee and also the weakness of the muscles surrounding it. At the University of Michigan they recommend strengthening those muscles before the girls play.

In other words, before they play baseball, soccer or basketball they have to strengthen the knee muscle, in particular the quadriceps, the hamstrings and the calf muscles six weeks prior to the sport even being started. If you do that you can prevent injuries and they're a major part of girls playing sports. If not, the risk of tearing the anterior cruciate ligament is eight times greater, and that's a major injury for anyone to have.

It's great living in Florida and it's facilities like this. The kids enjoy it and the parents enjoy it, but we're not going to enjoy our kids getting hurt.

And I'm Dr. David Vastola and that's life.
