PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (WFLX) - A Port St. Lucie toddler has a bruised lung after, police say, his grandfather backed over him, but investigators had to weed through several stories to learn the truth about the accident.

Police say the mother of 18-month-old Quintone Flemming called 9-1-1 to report her son was run over by a car; she wasn't sure how it happened. That story changed after detectives questioned her.

The grandfather eventually came forward saying the toddler followed him outside as he was moving cars in the driveway, and he accidentally hit the toddler.

"The main thing is what not intentional; it was not malicious," said Tom Nichols, Port St. Lucie Police Department. "So, we are going to consult the state attorneys office [to see] whether they [the grandfather] get arrested of not."

Flemming is still at St. Mary's Medical Center. Police say he had tire marks on his shirt from where the car hit him.
