Walk to School Day

Posted by Rachel Leigh - email

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Wednesday is "Walk to School Day". It's a time when "Safe Kids USA" hopes to promote safety awareness.

In our area, this walk has special meaning. Last month, 8-year-old Liam Rojas was killed while riding his bike home from Pine Jog Elementary in suburban West Palm Beach.

Therefore, Wednesday morning, volunteers, along with students and others in the community, walked together to promote safety.

Nationwide, we're told more than 600 activities will be taking place as part of the safety day. Thousands of students will be walking to school with volunteers to call attention to unsafe intersections, streets without sidewalks and areas where pedestrians have been hit or nearly injured.

According to Safe Kids Palm Beach County, one out of every six drivers in school zones is distracted.

Twenty schools in Palm Beach County will be participating in events Wednesday.
