FAU student's message in a bottle washes up in Ireland

MELBOURNE, FL (WFLX) - It may have taken 16 months, but a 'message in the bottle' from a local student made it more than 3,500 miles away to a small coastal town in Ireland.

It all started out as an experiment to explain ocean currents; students at Melbourne High School were told to write a message in the bottle two years ago.

Corey Swearingen didn't expect to hear anything back; however, he wrote his e-mail address on the letter, capped it, and threw it into the Atlantic Ocean. The bottles from the class were taken 20 miles offshore.

Believe it or not, it landed in Ireland. The Flannery family found the bottle on the shore outside a pub. The father and son contacted Corey's high school teacher. "I think, they just e-mailed them, and he messaged me and told me about it."

Now, the bottle will be kept inside Kitty's Pub which is steps away from the big find from overseas.

Now, an Florida Atlantic University freshman studying finance, Corey hopes to one day visit the pub.
