Boca company caught in $2 mil Medicare fraud case

BOCA RATON, FL (WFLX) - The feds are focusing on a Boca-based mental health care facility as part of a massive Medicare fraud case. The case is called the largest fraudulent billing scheme ever prosecuted by the FBI's Strike Force.

The company, American Therapeutic Corporation, is the largest chain of community mental health centers in the nation.

Four people were arrested during the raid Thursday. They're accused of scheming to defraud the taxpayer funded Medicaid program out of $2 million.

Prosecutors say American Therapeutic and its sister companies were faking charts and submitting false claims. "This represents the largest fraudulent billings scheme ever prosecuted by the strike force," said Lanny Breuer.

The investigation began last year with a employee's tip. Federal agents say the company preyed on dementia patients billing medicaid for services it often never delivered.

So far, those operations are responsible for more than 800 indictments that collectively billed the Medicare program for more than $1.8 billion.
