Boca Raton mausoleum haunted by little girl

BOCA RATON, FL (WFLX) - Images that come to mind when thinking of Florida: palm trees, sunshine and beaches but not ghosts.

But, according to some, there are ghosts all over South Florida. One of those places is the Boca Raton Cemetery.

The mausoleum at the Boca Raton Cemetery is the resting place for many people, including a girl who has been seen roaming around the halls.

Greg Jenkins is a folklorist who writes about paranormal activity people witness including a ghost at the cemetery that goes by the name Mary. "Mary is a little ghost, a little girl ghost, around 13 or 14 years of age," Jenkins explained. "She is seen mostly in the main mausoleum."

Jenkins says she's seen kneeling, looking as if she is praying, and doesn't cause trouble. "She is not dangerous. She doesn't really communicate with anybody, but usually, when they do see her, she is usually smiling and content. But it seems, Mary has a few friends."

The mausoleum was built in the early 90s. Shortly after, long-time residents, like Wayne Smith who live next to the cemetery, started hearing what sounds like kids playing near bushes that separates the cemetery from the homes.

"[Sounds like] running back and fourth, playing tag or something like that. Then, suddenly, I looked around the hedges, and they weren't there," said Smith.

According to Jenkins, kid ghosts aren't the only unexplained things to happen. Since retired, a caretaker at the cemetery years ago reports hearing a man's screams. When he gets close to the source of the scream, it stops. When he leaves the area, it starts again.

Supposedly, he called police, and they investigated it. "Nobody was here, and there was nothing to be said about it." However, Jenkins says, the screams continue to be reported usually during severe storms and have yet to be explained.
