PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (WFLX) - A disturbing find in Port St. Lucie. A woman and a dog are found dead inside a car in a lake.
A witness saw 40-year-old Dawn Sokolowski drive into the lake at Cashmere and Lake Forest. The witness went home to call 911.
Once firefighters arrived, it took 20 minutes to locate the car which was submerged in eight feet of water.
By the time firefighters pulled Sokolowski from the water, she was dead. Rescuers also found a dead chihuahua in the woman's car.
"Right now, it's a traffic homicide investigation," said Officer Tom Nichols, Port St. Lucie Police Department. "We're going to wait for the toxicology report to come back. That will give an indication of what may have happened or may not have happened."
The witness says the car did not brake, and estimates it entered the water at about 15 miles an hour.
