Acne Myths

I'm Dr. David Vastola and Patrick is depressed today. He's got a hot date, he got all dressed up and guess what? He's got a zit, probably because he's all excited. He wants to get rid of it so the first thing I did was reach for the Windex. If you saw the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding, you know this thing works. There are a lot of myths surrounding acne, let's review them.

The first myth is that acne is contagious - believe it or not some people think it is.
It really isn't. The only time it can be is if it gets really infected and there is a lot of drainage. The drainage can have bacteria which can be spread. Other than that acne is not contagious.

The second myth is that it is secondary to poor hygeine: 'that kid of mine is not washing his face.' It's not true. The reason why acne results is that desclymated skin mixes with the oil, plugs the pores, then bacteria gets in there and causes the infection. That's where acne originates. If you wash your face too much with soap and water it can make it worse because it will dry your face out.

The third myth is that chocolate, greasy food and even pizza can cause it. It's not true. Foods do not cause acne.

The fourth myth is that alcohol will dry them up. It's not true. The only thing alcohol will do is dry up the skin, fissure it, and more bacteria will become a problem. So when it comes to acne if you get a zit like this beware of the myths because you're going to be headed up the wrong tree. About Windex? I'm not sure - only a Greek would know.

And I'm Dr. David Vastola and that's life.
