Travel Survival Kit

I'm Dr. David Vastola and Patrick is getting ready to take a trip. If you're going to travel out of the country, it might be a good idea to pre-empt any medical problems. We've been reading about these cruises and the norwalk virus - how it can ruin your trip, but there are also other types of organisms that can ruin your trip. If you had to have a survival kit to pre-empt the problem what would it be? Let me show you mine.

My survival kit would include the following. Now remember, you have to assume you're not going to be able to find anything. It starts with travel Kleenex because when you need any you can't find them. Also some kind of sterilizer for your hands or body when needed. You're going to need some prescriptions. The main one is Cipro because it kills most of the negative bacteria that can cause significant illnesses on a trip. Also Pepto Bismol will work - it kills bacteria because of the bismoth in it. Immodium you can buy over the counter, great for diarrhea. Pedialyte - it's great for replacing the fluid and electrolytes you might lose - you're not going to find it overseas. Also a special bottle - this is a water bottle which purifies the water, filters it out. Buy it and make it part of your kit. Lastly, get information from the CDC. Know where you're going. Get on their info hotline, find out what to look for and take their advice.

If you do all that you're probably going to pre-empt most problems that could occur, in which case you're going to enjoy that trip. There's nothing worse than spending a lot of money on a vacation and being sick at the same time.

And I'm Dr. David Vastola and that's life.
