COLLIER COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - A Collier County woman picked up cholera while visiting family in a part of Haiti devastated by the deadly outbreak in that country.
Doctors in the state are also awaiting test results from several other suspected cases. The cholera epidemic has killed about more than 1,000 people in Haiti according to reports.
At this point, doctors aren't worried about an epidemic in Florida because, when it comes to sanitation, conditions are dramatically different from Haiti.
"We have purified drinking water and our food supply is getting checked, so we're unlikely to have an epidemic in the United States," said Dr. David Dodson, infectious disease expert.
