Coyote attacks toy poodle in Jupiter backyard

JUPITER, FL (WFLX) - A Jupiter woman is still shaken up after watching a coyote attack her small dog in her backyard.

"As I'm running, he has my dog in his mouth," described Chrissie Mongeau who lives in Egret Landing in Jupiter.

Her toy poodle, Ruffles, was attacked by a coyote Friday night. "I feel he's a little a little traumatized. You can see his wounds.

Mongeau says she was in her screened porch while Ruffles was in the backyard. That's when the coyote suddenly appeared. "He wrapped his mouth around my dog, and then turned around and took off."

Mongeau says she immediately ran out yelling. "The adrenaline was pumping so hard that I didn't have time to think, 'Oh my God, I'm chasing a coyote.' I got about to here, and he dropped him, because I was screaming."

Mongeau's 12-year old daughter, Alexis, ran to comfort the bleeding Ruffles, but the little dog nipped at Alexis causing a small puncture wound.

Ruffles went to the vet, and Alexis saw her doctor.

Mr. Mongeau says he's checked out the fence around his property, and it is completely in tact meaning the coyote would have had to jump a four foot fence to get into the yard. According to Mrs. Mongeau, he was about to jump back out with the dog in his mouth.

Wildlife experts say coyotes can jump very high and can also squeeze through very small openings under a fence.

Just six weeks ago, a coyote attack was reported in the neighboring Abacoa development. "So I just hope everybody hears this story and just really watches out for their children and pets."

David Hitzig, an animal expert from the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary in Jupiter, says coyotes have been in Jupiter for years and that they do not generally attack domestic pets; instead, they usually prefer easier prey like small wild animals.
