Florida high schools improve grades

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - The grades are in for Florida's public high schools, and education officials say performance during the 2009-2010 year shows significant strides.

Of the 470 high schools graded, 71 percent received an A or B. Another 15 percent received a C, while 12 percent earned a D and 11 percent were given an F.

Officials say those grades are an improvement over the last school year, even while taking into account new changes in how the markings are calculated.

The new grades take into account factors other than performance on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, to include measures like graduation rates and Advanced Placement class performance.

The school grade system was adopted in 1999 as part of then-Gov. Jeb Bush's "A-Plus" school accountability program.

In Palm Beach County alone, 15 high schools earned A's, nine earned B's, one school got a C, one was graded a D and the county's only F-rated school is Leadership Academy West, a charter school that didn't get a grade last year.

Here's a look at the remaining four counties:

Martin County high schools earned three A's and one B.

St. Lucie County got one A-rated school, one B, three C schools, and one D.

Indian River's three high schools all got B's...and Okeechobee's "only" high school earned a C.
