Family hopes stem cell treatment will help daughter's brain degeneration

BOYNTON BEACH, FL (WFLX) - A Boynton Beach family is asking for help from the public to try an experimental stem cell treatment on their daughter.

Twenty-eight-year-old Jana Hugon's brain has been degenerating since she was 3 years old. Her parents say she had a very rare and very bad reaction to a medicine she was given for an eye problem.

They say doctors had told them to put their daughter in hospice, but they refuse and will keep on fighting. Now, they're holding out hope stem cells will make her condition better. They believe the South Florida Bone Marrow Stem Cell Transplant Institute in Boynton Beach and Dr. Dipnarine Maharaj can help them.

"They stimulate her bone marrow to regenerate the brain quickly. She's young girl. We are very hopeful that will stimulate her for this first treatment," said her father, Brian Hugon.

They need $50,000 to perform the procedure. They say they've already raised half of the money from relatives and complete strangers.

They've set up a Web site where people can donate. If you're interested in helping, you can log onto HopeForJana.com.
