Tequesta couple home after ship loses power near Antarctica

TEQUESTA, FL (WFLX) - Ken and Linda Mates of Tequesta are back from the journey of a lifetime.

Video of 50 foot waves crashing into their cruise ship aired all over the world after the ship lost power on a trip to Antarctica (previous story).

Now, the couple is home to explain what it was like on board and why they weren't surprised by their "perfect storm" experience.

Ken and Linda Mates say they knew what they were getting into when they signed up for the $9,000 a person voyage. "They told you, you will spend two days in your cabin for your own safety. This is the Drake," said Linda.

The Drake Passage, south of the southern tip of South America, is one of the most dangerous stretches of ocean. Passengers had to sign a medical release just to board.

What they weren't expecting, though, was the wave that smashed out a window on their ship, knocked out communications, and forced the captain to declare an emergency.

"The boat would slam into something, and that would scare me," Linda recalled. "And I thought, I hope this thing holds together."

Ken and Linda took video of the ship that came to their rescue, a National Geographic ship. The video shows just how hard it was for cruisers to stand up or even walk. "One time, I was sitting and eating, and me and my chair, everything goes [slides] that way," said Ken.

They say everyone on board took it all in stride.

The ship finally made it home on its own safe and sound.

Believe it or not, Ken and Linda say they would do it all over again and would recommend this cruise to anyone -- especially those who don't get sea sick.
