Modern-day Bonnie & Clyde team stopped by Stuart police

STUART, FL (WFLX) - A violent gun battle between police and a pair of brazen bank robbers ends with one suspect dead and the other hospitalized.

Police say, a modern day Bonnie and Clyde robbed a Chase Bank and tried to get away. It happened just before 2 p.m. Thursday in Stuart.

A man and a woman entered the Chase Bank at US 1 and Monterey. The man pulled out a weapon, passed a note to the teller demanding money, and then the couple sped off in a silver Ford Mustang.

By that time, Stuart police were pulling up. "He came south on Federal. He engaged the chief and pointed a firearm at him and the assistant chief of police," said an officer.

It wasn't until a Martin County Sheriff's deputy, in an unmarked SUV, got rammed by the out of control duo, that things ended in a shootout.

It's unclear how many shots were exchanged, but the woman was shot dead on the scene. Her male partner in crime critically wounded and airlifted to a trauma center.

No law enforcement officers were injured.

The couple's vehicle had Massachusset's plates, and, police say, this unusual man and woman bank-robbing team are suspected in robberies in other states.

The male bank robber was flown to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition.

Police hope to release more details including bank surveillance video of the two Friday.
