DELRAY BEACH, FL (WFLX) - A forgotten toddler died in a sweltering daycare van at Katie's Kids in Delray Beach in early August. Now, legal maneuvering is underway to make sure Haile Brockington didn't die in vain.

A state lawmaker introduced a bill that would call for a special kind of alarm on daycare vans. Florida is not the first state to suggest this new act.

At a news conference at a private school in Boca Raton Thursday, a state senator, who stood next to 2-year-old Haile Brockington's mother, said, she feels, Florida needs to do what several other states have already done: Pass a law that would require all daycare centers in the state to install safety alarms on their vans.

The alarm says, "Warning, Kiddie Voice has activated". The safety alarm would remind the driver to make sure no children are still inside the van once they've reached their destination.

If the driver ignores the alarm, a siren goes off a few minutes later that alerts anyone nearby the van was not checked, and there could still be a child inside the van. "There's no reason why we cannot and should not use technology to keep our babies safe," said Senator Maria Sachs.

Some believe one of those safety alarms might have saved the life of 2-year-old Haile Brockington, who, police say, was forgotten, and left in a daycare van at Katie's Kids for about six or seven hours. The little girl did not survive.

Two daycare employees are now facing criminal charges as a result of that incident and were fired.

Sen. Sachs says if the bill passes requiring the alarms in daycare vans, the law would take effect in July.

Three other states -- Tennessee, Wisconsin and Arkansas -- already have a similar law on the books requiring all daycare center vans to have alarms.
