Unemployed mother fighting cancer

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL (WFLX) - Just diagnosed with breast cancer, Melissa Aztiazarain's now in for the fight of her life and needs all the help she can get.

"All I know is that there is one in my lymph. [There] could be more; I don't know. It grew so fast in such a short period of time," said Melissa Aztiazarain, a 35-year-old mother of two young boys.

This mother has been without work for more than two years. Her husband is also unemployed; yet, they both have master's degrees.

The cancer is the latest hit to a family already struggling to survive in this tough economy. "Everything that is good and positive, pay attention, it means a lot. It can change how you can recover from cancer," Melissa said.

After the birth of her second child two years ago, breast cancer developed in her body. "Build strength for what's to come, that's the hardest part," she said.

She and her husband already had so much to worry about. She's been out of work for two years. But with a master's degree in real estate, her husband has not been able to find permanent work in the construction industry. He'll do anything to help her get better. "Whether it's carrying her out of the chem or feeding her, work where I have to make it better," said Martin Aztiazarain.

Melissa planned enough to get insurance; even though, she was unemployed. She however has a very high deductible. "We look at the thousands of dollars just to begin the chemo. They won't administer it without it," she said.

"You get caught up in the money of treatment, but it's that, and the burden of not knowing what's going to happen," Martin continued.

That's why Melissa and Martin are taking the next few days before chemo starts to speak to everyone about getting checked. "If you don't go, what you don't want to hear will come knocking at your door," Melissa said.

"I hope every husband tells his wife to go out and get checked out," Martin said. "And every wife tells her husband to go get checked out to help out."

Cabo Flats at Downtown at the Gardens in Palm Beach Gardens is holding a fundraiser for Melissa next Wednesday from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.
