Child plunges car into canal with family inside

LOXAHATCHEE, FL (WFLX) - A mother and her young children are fighting for their lives. The car carrying the family of five plunged into a Loxahatchee canal Sunday night.

Rescuers had to pull several of them from the submerged car.

The family was taken to Palms West Hospital, where Sunday night, the two children and their mother were listed in critical condition. The father and a 12-year-old are said to be in better shape.

Investigators believe the 12-year-old was driving the vehicle when he apparently lost control and landed upside down in a deep canal.

Wreckers pulled the family's Isuzu Rodeo out of the canal Sunday night.

Investigators said a man and the 12-year-old were in the front seat; they both made it out of the car.

That father, with the help of deputies, was able to rescue the 4-year old and a 1-year old from the backseat.

Deputies said it took nearly 20 minutes to get the mother, who was trapped in the SUV out.

Investigators have not released the names of the family involved in the crash.  They did tell Fox 29 that they live in the Loxahatchee area.
