Riviera Beach dive charter captain bitten by shark in Bahamas

WEST END, BAHAMAS (WFLX) - The U.S. Coast Guard responded to a shark bite victim just north of the West End in the Bahamas Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Coast Guard, 55-year-old Jim Abernethy was on a diving excursion with the commercial diving vessel "Shear Water" when he was bitten on the arm.

Abernethy was then flown to St. Mary's Medical Center for treatment. He is currently in 'good condition'.

Jim Abernethy owner of the Riviera Beach based dive charter company, "Jim Abernethy's Scuba Adventures".

In 2008, a 39-year-old Austrian tourist was bitten by a shark on the same vessel in the Bahamas and died due to blood loss.
