FL lawmaker proposes selling naming rights to landmarks

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - What's in a name? Turns out, a building, road or park with a name could add up to a lot of money for the state of Florida.

A Florida lawmaker is proposing legislation that would allow the state, local governments and even school districts to sell naming rights.

If it passes, corporate sponsors could re-name the "Florida Turnpike" and other state-owned buildings and attractions.

The measure could even permit advertising space on school buses.

"Florida is swimming in red ink," said Representative Irv Slosberg.  "We need more money to pay our teachers. We have so many issues and the great thing about this: it doesn't cost the state or county 10 cents."

Representative Slosberg said the state could hire an advertising czar who would bring in large companies to buy Florida's naming rights.
