'Lantana Lou' marks Groundhog Day in South Florida

LANTANA, FL (WFLX) - It's Groundhog Day, South Florida style!

Lantana continues its tradition Wednesday morning of "Lantana Lou," the town's version of Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania.

But instead of a groundhog predicting how long winter will be, Lantana has former councilman Lou Canter, who stands at the edge of the beach, predicting great South Florida weather for snowbirds.

This year, the town is also launching coconuts into the ocean, in honor of saving the post office.

In 2009, Lantana's post office branch was in jeopardy of closing, but concerned homeowners rescued the branch and sent more than 500 coconuts to the Postmaster General. The branch now remains open.

And great news this Groundhog Day. Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow, so it will be an early spring for the folks up north.
