Poll: Submitted ads make super commercials

(RNN) - What do a slow-mo pug, Eminem, singing cowboys and a pint-sized Darth Vader have in common? They were some of the characters featured in the off-gridiron battle of Super Bowl XLV.

The beer companies eased the competition last night, giving way to new commercial stars.

User-submitted commercials from the Doritos and Pepsi MAX Crash the Super Bowl ad contest dominated airwaves. One such star, the pug in Doritos' "Pug Attack," graced the small screen with his large, hungry eyes.

Another Doritos commercial featured a young man who breaks all social barriers when he is overcome by the smell and taste of the cheesy chip.

In the USA Today Super Bowl Ad Meter, "Pug Attack" tied for the top spot along with Anheuser-Busch's "Dog Sitter" spot, in which a crafty dog sitter employs his dogs to serve drinks at a house party.

Volkswagen might have taken home the heart-warming award with "The Force." The ad featured a huggable pint-sized Darth Vader failing at all attempts to use the Force until, with an unknown assist from his father, he starts the family's Passat.

Rapper Eminem showed his cartoon face in an ad for Lipton Brisk Tea. But the Detroit rapper stood out in Chrysler's "Imported from Detroit," an emotional commercial branding not only a car but also a revitalized Motor City.

Like them or not, the $3 million per 30-second price tag should keep these commercials playing on repeat throughout the year.
