Calls for guardrails after another deadly crash

BELLE GLADE (WFLX) - Calls for guardrails along State Road 80 are getting louder after a mother and her two children died in a weekend canal crash.

The accident happened along 80 near Belle Glade where FDOT announced last August plans for guardrails were underway. An FDOT spokesperson tells us construction on the $4.3 million project is expected to start this fall.

On State Road 80, guardrails are expected to be installed from State Road 880 to State Road 15; that's an 18-mile stretch.

It's also a deadly stretch for canal crashes. Twelve people have died in canal crashes in that stretch in the last seven years.

After Dieula Francois and her two children died in a canal crash Saturday, Palm Beach County Commissioner Jess Sanatamaria isn't guarded about his opinion. "I am outraged as to what's been happening," said Santamaria.

Santamaria joined local support last summer to install the guardrails, but he is upset the project hasn't started yet. "They should just let thing get started now. It should have been started six months ago. I just can't understand what they're waiting for. It's the usual bureaucracy."

FDOT says the project is on schedule. A spokesperson says FDOT will advertise the project late June and open bids late July.
