PBC School District superintendent contract debate

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Will Palm Beach County School District Superintendent Art Johnson stay or go? That's the question many Palm Beach County school teachers, administrators and staff are asking.

Palm Beach County is home to the 11th largest school system in the nation; making Johnson one of the areas most influential people.

"He's the CEO of 22,000 people; that's bigger than most corporations," said Tom Whatley, an education advocate.

Monday night, a group of nearly 100 district principals met at Palm Beach Central High School to discuss Johnson's future employment status.

"He has hired just about all of those principals in their position," said Whatley.

Johnson is accused of allegedly covering up for a former administrator who was doing outside consulting while still on the district's payroll.

"You're innocent until proven guilty in the United States, so until they prove it that he did do it, then that's when I would be concerned about it, and he should step down," said Darlene Ruiz, a parent.

Whatley believes if Johnson were to resign the best scenario is for him to assist with the new superintendent search.

There will be a special school board meeting Wednesday at 3 p.m. to discuss proposal options to end Johnson's work contract.  The meeting is set to take place at the school board district offices.

"It's going to be a marathon tomorrow [Wednesday]. You guys might want to bring a sleeping bag...it's gonna be a long day tomorrow," said Whatley.
