Operation Mermaid Made Waves In South Florida

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) Multi-agency task-force called "Operation Mermaid" made waves Sunday with local boaters.

A coalition of state and local organizations increased the number of patrols in the "no-wake" zones along the intra-coastal.

It's all in an effort to protect migrating manatees during the winter months.

The task force is trying to stress that slow speeds and a watchful eye are crucial to protecting these gentle and vulnerable giants .

Officer Katie Wright with the Florida Fish and Wildlife said, "Our bilogist told us we've lost 137 manatees so far. Last year we lost about ten percent of our manatee population."

Operation Mermaid takes its name from the popular belief that ancient mariners who wrote about seeing mermaids may have actually spotted manatees.
