Fugitive captured: Father's death brought to justice

DELRAY BEACH, FL (WFLX) - More than a decade of running for one of Florida's most wanted fugitives is over, and at the same time, a devastated family's wish has come true.

Lawrence Wayne, who was convicted in 1998 for DUI manslaughter, has been caught in Israel.

"I was like are you serious?" said Catherine Cantwell, the wife of Wayne's victim, Don Cantwell. "I lost my best friend. My children lost their father, and every milestone that they have, I think it would be so nice for their father to see this."

One night in 1998, Lawrence Wayne went drinking.

Then, he drove. One witness says, he may have been going nearly 100 miles an hour down I-95. He slammed into Donald Cantwell as he drove to work sending his pickup flying 163 feet.

Wayne was captured, convicted, then let out on bond as he appealed.

In 2000, Wayne disappeared, leaving his parents a note that he'd never be back. For 13 years, Wayne lived in Israel under a fake name.

Cantwell raised her boys, Jeffrey and Michael. She also beat cancer and started a new career in radiology. "I decided that life was too short, so I went back to school," said Cantwell.

She didn't realize how big of a priority Wayne remained until Tuesday when she learned he'd been captured in Israel after authorities traced an application for a fake passport.

"It was really overwhelming. It was 'like holy cow, I can't believe this is happening.' I'm getting chills right now just thinking about it," she said. "We need to wrap this up so we can move forward."

Wayne will need to be extradited from Israel. That's a process that can take weeks or even years.
