Police pursuit ends in drowning

NORTH PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - A police pursuit ended in a drowning outside of a North Palm Beach condo complex just before 4 a.m. Monday.

Police say the event began in Riviera Beach when police ordered a driver to stop near West Blue Heron Boulevard and Congress Avenue and he refused.

The man was identified as Shein Shaw, 33, of Riviera Beach.

Shaw traveled to North Palm Beach, left his vehicle, and plunged into the Intracoastal Waterway behind the Ports O' Call condo complex.

According to Riviera Beach police, officers tossed two life rings and a ladder into the water near Shaw but he refused their help.

They say he tried to tread water then disappeared below the surface.

The Palm Beach County Special Operations Unit eventually found him but he was pronounced dead at Palm Beach Gardens Hospital.

According to police Shaw attempted to ram at least one police vehicle during the pursuit. They say he also attempted to run into another city police vehicle when he fled from a traffic stop two days earlier.

Police say anyone with information that would aid their investigation should call Riviera Beach Police at (561) 845-4123 or Palm Beach Crime Stoppers at 1-800-458-TIPS.
