Ban on fake marijuana takes effect

BOCA RATON, FL (WFLX) - A huge cache of fake marijuana was handed over to police Monday night. At midnight a ban on the chemicals used to make it goes into effect.

The DEA enacted the ban last year because, they say, synthetic marijuana was even more dangerous than real marijuana.

The owners of "Mary Joy" synthetic marijuana dropped off a $500,000 of the product in northwest Boca for the police to pick it up before the midnight deadline.

The product was allowed to skirt around the law because it was marketed as an incense.

But emergency rooms reported problems with people having seizures and other serious health problems.

Synthetic marijuana was originally invented as a way to duplicate the so-called positive effects of marijuana when used for medicinal purposes.

The ban is expected to last for at least a year.
