New Port St. Lucie police chief sworn in

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (WFLX) - The city of Port St. Lucie has a new police chief.

Brian Reuther was sworn in Monday night. He has been the Assistant Chief for 20 years and was acting chief three times in the past.

He said one of his biggest challenges will be the budget. The city is facing a possible 10-percent reduction in property value next year.

"We've laid off 24 officers; we've laid off over 18 civilian employees," said Reuther.  "I'm hoping that we can get through this year with no additional budget cuts, and then hopefully, things will start to turn around."

Reuther takes over for Don Shinnamon. He was fired last December for unknown reasons.
