WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - We now know the cause of death for Nubia Barahona, the 10-year-old girl found dead in the back of pickup truck along I-95.
After an autopsy, the medical examiner determined her death to be due to blunt force trauma.
Carmen Barahona, her adoptive mother, was taken into custody and charged with first degree murder. According to the affidavit, she covered up the murder of Nubia by telling her adoptive son, Victor, that his sister simply went away.
Adoptive father, Jorge Barahona, who still sits in the Palm Beach County jail, is accused of using his bare hands to beat the little girl.
The director for Miami-Dade's Police Department has described the Barahona couple as beyond evil. Jorge and Carmen Barahona both face first-degree murder charges in the death of 10-year-old Nubia.
The Miami-Dade State Attorney says the facts in this case may lead to them to seek the death penalty.
Three days before Nubia was found dead and her brother in critical condition, it's alleged the children were bound and put into a bathtub for hours.
According to the affidavit, little Victor watched helplessly as his twin sister was picked up by Jorge and taken to the bedroom. He listened in horror as his sister screamed and cried while she was beaten and punched to death by her adoptive father.
The little girl was found three days later in a bag in the back of Jorge's pick-up truck, dead, decomposing and soaked in a hazardous liquid. Her brother, Victor, in critical condition in the passenger seat.
Now, Carmen Barahona also faces several counts of child neglect and abuse.
The day before Nubia's murder, an investigator went to the Barahona home after receiving a tip on the DCF hotline about abuse at the home.
The affidavit says Carmen admitted to investigators she intentionally misled the DCF investigator about the whereabouts of the children.
Investigators say the chemicals used on the children is still being tested. Jorge has pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder of Victor.
