Lois Frankel to run for Congress

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - West Palm Beach Mayor Lois Frankel is throwing her hat into a different political ring.

Frankel, whose term as mayor expires this month, announced Monday she is running for the U.S. House District 22 seat currently held by Allen West. Ft. Lauderdale businessman Patrick Murphy has also announced he will seek the Democratic nomination for the seat, which covers much of northern Broward and southern Palm Beach counties.

Frankel said her focus is on jobs and economic opportunities. "Today is about working families, people who want to keep their job or are looking for a job," Frankel.

West defeated incumbent Democrat Ron Klein last November and has been a polarizing figure for some since. West made national headlines for comments he has made about Islam at a town hall meeting, saying that Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minnesota), the first Muslim elected to Congress, "really does represent the antithesis of the principles upon which this country was established".

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is already targeting West as one of the Republicans they would most like to knock off in 2012. The DCCC has already run anti-West radio ads in the district.

Frankel has been mayor of West Palm Beach since 2003. Before that, she served 14 years in the Florida House of Representatives. Frankel will run her last city commission meeting as mayor Monday afternoon.
