South Florida Couple Could Face Death Penalty in Child Murder Case

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) On Monday morning, a South Florida couple accused of murdering their adopted daughter and nearly killing her twin brother will learn the penalties they could be facing in her death. Jorge and Carmen Barahona will hear for themselves whether or not prosecutors will seek the death penalty for the killing of their ten year old daughter, Nubia.

Jorge and Carmen Barahona will soon find out if prosecutors will seek the ultimate punishment for Nubia Barahona's murder.

Last week, a Miami-Dade County grand jury returned an 18 count indictment against the Barahonas, charging them with first degree murder, aggravated child abuse, torture, child neglect and abuse of a human body. The indictment also contains allegations of abuse of a third child in the Barahona household.

"It's pretty clear that there was abuse going on to at least three of the four children who lived in that household," said Miami Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez-Rundle.

On Valentine's Day, authorities in West Palm Beach discovered Nubia's body, badly decomposed and covered with chemicals, stuffed in a bag in the back of Jorge Barahona's pickup truck. Her twin brother, Victor, had also been doused in chemicals. He was badly burned and convulsing, when he was found in the truck with their adoptive father, Jorge Barahona.

Authorities removed the Barahonas' remaining children from the home while they investigate how the family escaped the attention of the Florida Department of Children and Families in what they're calling one of Florida's worst child abuse cases in the state's history.

"What should have been a happy household really did turn into a house of horrors," explained Fernandez-Rundle.

Jorge Barahona is being held in the Miami-Dade County Jail. Carmen Barahona is in the Miami-Dade Women's Detention Center.
