Yachts catch fire at Stuart marina

STUART, FL (WFLX) - Martin County Fire Rescue is investigating the cause of a four-yacht fire at the Sailfish Marina in Stuart.

About 11:30 p.m. Monday, firefighters responded to a fire involving at least two 50-foot long sport fishing vessels, Martin County Fire Rescue training chief Bill Schobel said.

A cause has not been determined.

High winds pushed one boat that was on fire into another vessel causing the fire to spread to two additional boats, he said. "These vessels are difficult to extinguish because fiberglass burns very hot," Schobel said.

Columns of black smoke billowed in the overcast skies, attracting the attention of Tom Danti, who this week was teaching a boating class on how to extinguish a fire on a burning vessel.

During the fire, the lines anchoring the burning boat to the dock snapped loose and sent the burning vessel drifting into other boats. "The heat was so intense that it caused a domino effect," Schobel said.

No injuries have been reported.
