(WFLX) - America sat in their living rooms stunned as front-runner Pia Toscano was voted off American Idol.
Toscano was carrying the girls left in the competition. Now, it will be up to Haley Reinhart and Lauren Aliana to break the 'boys' winning streak'.
Well, the truth is Idol has a long history of exits that outraged as much as they surprised. Jennifer Hudson and Chris Daughtry -- ring a bell?
But the Idol producers have a solution; we'll add in a judges saved. Too bad they used the one save on Casey Abrams already.
So why did this happen?
First, the judges did a superb job selecting the top 24, and voting has gone pretty smootly with little surprises and upsets. So each week, when we lose an extremely talented performer, we're all a bit disappointed. No one, however, expected Toscano to leave so soon.
Second, people assume the front-runners are safe and don't need to be voted for. Just like voting for president, we all think, 'What's my one vote going to matter?' Thursday night, we saw what that looked like.
Logistics aside, could it had been Toscano's failure to come out of her shell? Did we need to see more personality? The gorgeous 22-year-old contestant from New York sang technically perfect but her shyness almost made her seem cold. Thus, preventing voters to connect her.
Regardless, we haven't see the last of this Toscano. She'll be picked up in no time and without the confides of being under the American Idol winner contract.
