Last Weekend Before the Big Diet (Friday)!!

So I start the 17 Day Diet Monday and while I'm very excited by this challenge, I am a bit nervous about sticking to the regimen. The diet is actually made up of FOUR 17-day cycles and the first cycle, which is the one I will be doing, is sort of a cleansing phase. No, I won't be only drinking liquids for 17 days, but carbs (which of course include sweets---my weakness) are not on the menu. Neither is beef or pork (so much for eating that leftover Easter Ham :) So this last weekend will be likely be a calorie fest. So far I've already had a scone, two blueberry muffins, and a chocolate chip cookie. Hey, gotta get it out of my system, right? Now, while the diet seems restrictive, it really isn't. There are good things to eat too. I can have plenty of fish, chicken, turkey, and fruit. All things that I LOVE!!! Wish me luck!

Day 1-Tuesday

Because of our coverage on the death of Osama Bin Laden's, the  start of the "17 Day Diet" was pushed back to today (Tuesday) and honestly, I sure wish I would've had one last treat! :) Someone brought pastries to the newsroom, but I was trying to get prepared to say "no" to sweets. While I may have missed out on the treats, I was proud of myself for laying down the first brick of my "wall of stamina" (is that a real thing?). Anyway, so far, Day One has been ok. I started off the morning with 6oz of plain Greek yogurt (which is A LOT more than it seems) mixed with a cup of blueberries and strawberries and sugar free strawberry jam! It was delicious and the best part was, it kept me full until it was time for my snack three hours later. For that, I had half a grapefruit. I also had another snack, which was a kefir smoothie. That was also AWESOME. It was a cup of kefir (similar to yogurt) mixed with berries and jam. So basically, it was what I had for breakfast, liquefied. Tonight, I'll have salmon, asparagus & spinach for dinner. This diet also requires that I drink 56 oz of water and 3 cups of green tea! That's A LOT of liquid! Then, as required by the diet, I will workout for 17 minutes. I'll likely head to the gym to get in a run on the treadmill. Now if you saw our 8am show, you know that today was my first weigh-in. My weight on Day One was 159.5 pounds. Just FYI, I'm 5'6 1/2". Hopefully, buy the time next week rolls around, the scale will have moved a little! I'll check in with you tomorrow.

Day 2-Wednesday

Well it's only Day Two and I've already had to deal with two stumbling blocks on the road to a fitter, healthier life. This morning I woke up EXTREMELY late and didn't have time to prepare breakfast. Stumbling Block #1. But I quickly jumped over that hurdle by whipping up a quick Kefir Smoothie (which I was going to have for a snack later in the day) and had that for breakfast and I had my breakfast for a snack. Lunch was Seared Tilapia and sauteed spinach. That's also ready in a flash which keeps me on track (because sometimes all I want to do is lay on the couch when I get home :) Oh no! I just got a craving for fruity pebbles! It's one of my guilty pleasures. I don't have them all the time. But every now and then, a craving hits and I'm off to the grocery store for a box of the fruity treat. But I digress. Stumbling Block #1...Chef David Pantone came to our studios today and whipped up a buttery, carb-filled treat. Everyone got to try it, but me! I took a picture of the goodies so you can see what I was dealing with. But I'll have the last laugh. Apparently, it freezes well so I took one home, put it in my freezer, and in 15 days I'll find out what the fuss was about :)

Day 3-Thursday

Yet another test of my willpower has reared it's ugly head on Day 3 of my "17-day Diet" journey. Some friends invited me out to a Mexican restaurant to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. I don't know about you, but when I go to a Mexican restaurant, I want chips & salsa, enchiladas, rice, refried beans & I want to wash that all down with a margarita! Save for the salsa, none of that is on the diet!! But hey, there's always Cinco de Mayo, 2012, right? Other than that, the diet is going well. I truly always fill full (well maybe satisfied is a better word) until it is time for me to eat again. Now full disclosure here, yesterday I didn't have my third cup of green tea, or workout, or have dinner. But in fairness to me, I went to sleep (for the night!) around four in the afternoon. By the way, I get up at 2:30am everyday. Tonight I plan to get my 17 minute workout in and I'll be eating baked chicken and steamed veggies for dinner. Well, I'm off to have my second snack of the day. I'm thinking a Kefir smoothie! Yeah, it's only day 3 and I'm already addicted to those things :)

Day 4-Friday

Will the people at Fox 29 please stop testing my willpower already?! This morning, our executive producer brought in homemade blueberry muffins (and trust me, they are delicious). But since I've had them numerous times before, I didn't need to partake in them...THIS TIME. I got a chance to speak with Dr. Mike Moreno today, the author of the "17-Day Diet", you'll see what he has to say about how to get around some of the diet's challenges Monday morning. This morning I did my second weigh-in and good news, the scale showed I'm down six pounds!! Now full disclosure: the first time I weighed in, I had already eaten. Today however, I didn't eat (not on purpose, I was just really busy) so obviously, I was going to be a lot lighter. I know I still dropped a few pounds though. I'm likely about 3-4 pounds down instead of six. But I think that's still great for being on the diet for less than a week! I love it! It definitely gives me motivation to keep trucking along for the next 13 days. Of course, it's easy to stay on the diet during the week, when my life is more structured, but this weekend will prove to be a test. I'll be blogging this weekend and let you know how it goes. Day 5 & 6--Saturday & Sunday

Okay, so it's Monday and I'm just now blogging about Saturday and Sunday. My bad :) But as you know, sometimes the weekend is so packed with activities and errands, time gets away from you. But I can tell you that Saturday was definitely the most challenging day of the two. Actually, the challenge started Friday night. I went to the mall and I was there for hours, which of course, meant I got hungry. But what is a "17-Day Diet" Diva to do when trying to eat "healthy" at a food court? Well my blogging buddies, I think I made a good choice. I ate bourbon chicken & stir fry chicken with steamed veggies. I got my "liberal" protein (like the book says) and my vegetables. Now, back to Saturday. I went to a luncheon with a friend and not only did the servers try to give me bread---twice---there was chocolate cake served for dessert. So I thought, maybe I'll have just a tiny taste. But you'll be happy to know, I resisted. When I think of the progress I've made in just one week, I decided I wanted to be diligent and stay the course. Saturday night was rough too. My friend and I then went to Red Lobster (which is famous for their cheese biscuits) and my "so-called" friend not only had THREE cheese biscuits right in front of me, but she slurped down a fruity, frozen (sugar laden) concoction. Now, that ain't right! But I'm proud of myself. I did really good this weekend. For my dinner, I had steamed veggies, a salad with low-cal balsamic vinaigrette, & grilled salmon & shrimp. I'll admit, it's difficult to follow the menus in the book. Sometimes, I just don't have time to cook those meals. For example, I picked up a rotisserie chicken from Publix because I didn't have time to cook last night. However, In just a week, I've already figured out as long as I stick to the diets principles (2 servings of low-sugar fruit, 2 servings of probiotics, like kefir & yogurt, lots of protein and veggies, no carbs outside of my fruit, 64 oz of water and 3 cups of green tea, I'm good :) I do have to get better on working out on weekends though. That is still a work in progress.

Day 7--Monday

So despite a wacky and busy weekend, I managed to stay at four pounds lost!! Yay! I told Dr. Mike Moreno, author of the "17-day Diet" about my progress and he said, he thinks I could lose 10 pounds by the time this diet is over. Today was a good day so far. I've already gotten in 48oz of the 64 oz of water the diet requires I get everyday. The good thing about that is, I burn a lot of calories walking to and from the ladies room :) But I digress. This morning for breakfast I whipped up one of my uber easy to make Kefir smoothies, then I had Greek yogurt sweetened with sugar free jam (can you sweeten something with a sugar free substance--lol!), and for lunch I had some of that chicken I bought from Publix Sunday with a side salad. And of course, a cup of green tea. My goal this week is to knock off at least three more pounds and to do at least 17 minutes of cardio exercise per day. That becomes difficult when all I want to do is sit on the couch and watch what I have on DVR at the end of a long workday, but I gotta get it done! And just in case you're wondering, dinner will be baked turkey breasts and steamed veggies.

 Day 8--Tuesday

Well yesterday evening was nuts! around 4pm I started getting pretty hungry. Considering I ate my snack around 1, hunger showed up pretty much on time. By the way, you're supposed to eat every 3-4 hours and since the "17-day Diet" allows for 3 meals and 2 snacks it keeps my hunger at bay and eating on schedule. But back to my 4pm hunger. Because I was in the nail salon (where it seemed like it took forever to get a mani/pedi) I couldn't eat. But afterwards, I went across the street to Wendy's and bought a grilled chicken sandwich. In keeping with the "17-Day Diet" Principles, I ditched the bread and ate just the chicken breast and lettuce & tomato (yes there was just one tomato :) Protein--Check! Veggies--Check! Now to today. Finally got around to having scrambled egg whites. I usually don't have time to make them, but this morning I found the time. I must confess though, I kind of cheat when it comes to scrambling eggs for breakfast. I scramble the eggs the night before then pop them into my "Ready-Set-Go" Xpress and in less than 1 minute, I've got a hot breakfast. I had that with a cup of grapes and my standard cup of water with lemon. Believe it or not! That fills me up for a few hours. FYI, if you don't have a "Ready-Set-Go" you can still make quick scrambled egg whites. Just spray a little non-stick spray in a bowl. Scramble your egg whites and pop them in the microwave for 1 minute! Boom! Scrambled eggs. Another confession, I think I'm officially a kefir smoothie addict! There is one sitting in my fridge right now that I will have for a snack and I'm sooo excited to drink it! It feels like a guilty pleasure, but not only is it low-cal it's got my serving of probiotic, fruit, and healthy fat (well sometimes--this time it does because I put a tablespoon of flaxseed oil in it). The hard part today is going to be to get my workout it. Tons of errands to run, but I think I'm going to hit the treadmill (for a 17 minute run of course) while Oprah is on. Day 9--Wednesday

Only two more days until my next weigh-in and if the skirt I wore today is any indication, then I've definitely dropped a few l-bs!! This skirt was always a little loose in the waist (as all my clothes are), but now is a little looser through the hips!! Yay! And guess what, as the diet promised, I never feel like I'm starving. The only problem I ran into yesterday was born out of my own procrastination! I went to bed late because I waited so long to workout. But I still did it! Yay!! I will say this, I'm now having to find more creative ways to eat because a girl can only take so much chicken so I finally got some turkey in. But the beauty of chicken is that you can season it a ton of different ways to make it taste different. I can also get my protein from eggs so that's good. And although it took a while to get used to plain Greek yogurt (I'll admit it taste like sour cream by itself) flavoring it with a couple of tablespoons of sugar free jam definitely does the trick! I will definitely continue having that little snack after the diet. Before, I would snack on flavored, "fruit-on-the-bottom" Greek yogurt, but unfortunately, those can have a ton of hidden carbs and sugar! Translation: "Weight Gain"! Hasta Manana!

Day 10--Thursday

So I have a confession to make...I've been eating peanut butter. I'm not sure if it's banned on the 17 diet or not, but it wasn't on the list and up until now I had only been eating things that were on the list of foods. But this is how I figure it, it's protein and good fat, right? Well only time and (the scales--lol) will tell if the PB was a setback. Sorry, I couldn't resist. I love me some peanut butter. Other than that, the diet is going much better than I expected. Yes, I miss being able to head over to Chick-Fil-A and get a Banana Pudding Shake (mmmm...shakes--she said in her Homer Simpson voice), but my stomach pretty much stays full so I don't have room for it even if I wanted to. Plus, I really want to see this diet through. Is anyone doing this diet with me? How's it going for you? Let me know.

Day11--Friday

Oh Happy Day!! I'm down two more pounds!! That's a total of about six pounds! Just eight pounds away from my goal. Or at least what I think I'll want to look like at 145 pounds. But I digress. So, I think I'm having dessert withdrawals! One of our producers was drinking from a bottle that was white on top and from a distance I thought she was eating a cupcake! But I'm going to stay the course! I'm so close! I can't get sidetracked and derailed now. In fact, I'm really proud of myself for something I did yesterday. I went out with a group of friends and while everyone else was eating carb-laden food, I made a special order of scrambled egg whites and water :) Is it kinda weird to have egg whites when everyone around you is eating sandwiches, chips and drinking beer? Yep! But I've got to keep my eye on the prize! And let me tell you, that statement is going to me more important than ever this weekend. I'll be hanging out in Key West with some girlfriends. Just to recap, alcohol is a no-no on the "17-Day Diet". Wish me luck!

 Days 12, 13, & 14--Saturday-Monday

Well, were do I begin?! I actually did pretty well despite going on a girls trip to Key West. I admit, I did have a slice of Key Lime Pie (that was on a stick and covered in Chocolate---I mean, you can't go to the Keys and not have Key Lime Pie!!), but that was the only "cheat" if you will. I still worked out Saturday and Sunday. However, my Aunt Flo decided to pay me a surprise visit and she can wreck havoc on a diet and the scale (fellas ask the ladies in your lives who Aunt Flo is if you're wondering what that has to do with my diet)! For the past couple of days, I've been craving sweets and despite not giving into my temptations (that is until I had frozen yogurt with strawberry sauce Monday afternoon--hey, at least it was sugar free) I still gained 1.5 pounds over the weekend. Now I could be wrong, but if you want my opinion, I think it was just a little water retention. Any who, the good thing about the 17 day diet is that Dr. Mike Moreno has a chapter call the PMS Exemption diet. Sorry if that's TMI, but it's a real chapter and a fact of life. Although carbs and sweets aren't allowed on the first 17 day cycle, Dr. Mike allows carbs and an oz of dark chocolate on his PMS Exception diet! Oh Happy Day! I emailed Dr. Mike to ask if this "Exemption Diet" is more of a Maintenance phase of if weight loss was actually possible. He told me, weight loss is still possible, however, increased exercise will be necessary. So I guess I'll have to workout a little longer than 17 minutes :) See you tomorrow!

Day 15--Tuesday

Only two more days!!! I'd be lying if I didn't say I was a little excited that my 17-day journey is almost over. Now this is not to say this diet hasn't been great. It definitely has been nice to drop a few pounds and most importantly, I've picked up several tips that I believe will help me knock off even more weight and keep it off, which as anyone who's dieted knows is the most challenging part of losing weight. I'll go into more detail about the tips I've picked up on the final day. As far as today goes, since delving into the PMS Exception Diet portion of the "17-day Diet" my eating is a bit different than it was during the early days of the diet. This morning I had some oatmeal with a chopped up a pear sprinkled with cinnamon. Since I've been on this diet, I've realized added sugar is a no-no when trying to lose weight so I opted for plain oatmeal. Now normally, I'd never eat that, but with the pear and cinnamon, it was pretty tasty :) For lunch I opted for a turkey patty on whole wheat bread loaded with lots of veggies and a bowl of fruit. Per the diet, that will be my last serving of fruit. No carbs (which includes fruit) after 2pm. In my case, it's noon since I wake up at 2am. I think for dinner, I'm going to bake a couple of chicken breast (yes, I'll eat just one) and pair that with steamed veggies. You know, it wasn't until I embarked on this diet journey that remembered that I LOVE steamed broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots. Hopefully I don't lose that love when the diet is officially over :) Day 16...you're on deck!

Day 16--Wednesday

One more day!!! Yay!! But here's the question, why is it that when you get to the finish line of something, that's when it becomes the most difficult?! Not only did I have a milkshake yesterday, but I had a cupcake today. Now, while the cupcake was vegan (we were doing a taste test to see if we could tell which food was vegan and which was traditional so I HAD to participate :) it and the milkshake are definite no-no's on the "17-day diet". But I tell you what, unlike what has happened to me in the past when I go on diet, instead of staying off the wagon when one of my toes comes off of it, I get right back on track for my next meal. By the way, this is how I justified drinking the milkshake yesterday. I went to the orthodontist to get my braces tightened and if you know anything about that process, you know it can be pretty painful!! After two hours of torture, the last thing I wanted to do was go home and cook or CHEW anything. And normally what they recommend you eat or drink following a visit is something liquid. Yes, I considered soup, but since a lot of the soup I have at home has chicken in it, I passed. Chicken=chewing which=PAIN!! You'll be happy to know I did workout out for an hour though so I think it all evened out. But like Dr. Moreno told me stepping off (I refuse to say I fell off) the wagon a couple of times, won't undo all your progress. It's when you step off and walk away for a while that the damage gets done. LAST DAY IS TOMORROW! LET'S MAKE IT A GOOD ONE!!

Day 17--Thursday

I MADE IT!!! Today is the 17th and final day of the "17-Day Diet" and I must say as Dr. Mike Moreno promised, the diet did get easier instead of harder. Now, I'm not going to lie, this week was a little trying. I was having sugar cravings like crazy. If you've ready my other blog entries then you know I gave in a couple of times, but I worked out so it didn't catch up with me on the scale. Anyway, although I will not continue with the next couple of cycles of the "17-Day Diet" I do think that if someone is on it and they can stick to a plan better than I, I recommend it. In my opinion, this isn't a "fad" diet in the traditional sense of the word. Also, I will definitely continue to do a few things I learned during the program. I will continue to drink 64 oz of water (or 8 cups with one of those 8oz cups being hot water with half a lemon squeezed in it) and I will continue to avoid carbs (including fruit) after I eat lunch. I will also likely implore the good doctor's strategy of "weekends off" where you're off the diet (but I definitely won't go Crazy) and I will step up my workouts. Quite frankly, I think that's the biggest reason I didn't lose more weight. I already ate pretty well before the diet so I think to affect a bigger change on the scale, I needed to go bigger with my workouts. Now, while the diet is technically over, I will still have to eat well tonight and tomorrow for breakfast because my final weigh-in isn't til tomorrow. Can't afford to do a lot of damage before I officially cross the finish line :) See you on TV tomorrow!

 17-Day Diet Final Thoughts--Friday

So I did my final weigh-in today. I came in at 154.75 pounds. Total weight loss was 5 1/2 pounds! I'll be honest, that was well below what I wanted to do, but the reality is, I just didn't put in enough of an effort at the gym. But that's ok. I think 5 1/2 pounds in 17 days is still great and a good jumping off point to continue on my journey to shed even more weight and tone up. In fact, I'm thinking of getting a bicycle to ride around town and challenge my body even more. I realized that's what I need. To challenge myself! This is my last blog entry for the 17-day diet, but keep checking our website. I just may start blogging about my live "post" the 17-day diet :)
