Fisherman's cause of death determined

SEWALL'S POINT, FL (WFLX) - Christopher Hill, the angler whose body was found Wednesday following a boating accident days earlier, died of drowning and "multiple blunt trauma injuries," a spokesperson for the medical examiner's office said Friday.

The body of Hill, 39, was found Wednesday morning on the shore of the St. Lucie River behind a home in the 100 block of South River Road in Sewall's Point. The Vero Beach man had been missing since Monday after apparently being thrown from a boat.

Hill's friend who also was on the boat, Amy Reede, 38, was rescued Monday by a couple returning from a fishing trip after they saw a small, unmanned Boston Whaler spinning fast in tight circles near the Evans Crary Bridge, which links Stuart and Sewall's Point.

A spokesperson for the medical examiner's office Friday said an autopsy was performed Thursday. She said the cause of death is listed as drowning and "multiple blunt trauma injuries".

"It was an accident," the spokesperson said. "It was a boating accident."

Following the recovery of Hill's body Wednesday, Lt. Vann Streety of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said the investigation would move in the direction of trying to determine how the incident happened.

That, he said at the time, included scrutinizing the 18-foot Boston Whaler, which is registered to Reede's boyfriend, Ed Scheel of Stuart.

It wasn't immediately clear Friday whether that examination has been completed.

Reede and Hill frequently went out on the boat and were on their way home when the incident occurred, Reede has said.

"It was a regular day, and I had a hold of his arm and I had a hold of the center console and he went to slow down to get under the bridge, and the next thing I remember was trying to find the top of the water," Reede said.
