Palm Beach Publix closes

PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Publix is shutting down its Sunset Avenue store in Palm Beach -- getting ready for demolition and new construction.

A larger Publix will take it's place, but for eight months, there won't be any major supermarkets on Palm Beach island.

At 10 p.m. Saturday night, Publix closed for the final time. Tosome it may not seem like a huge deal, but to those who use the store just about every day, this is big.

Preliminary work on the new Publix started a couple of months ago.  It will soon be torn down, making way for a new 45,000 square foot Publix.

The first Publix store first opened on Palm Beach in 1971.

The new, mediterranian-style store is set to open to customers on December 19.
