Backhoe flips, pins victim underwater

PORT ST LUCIE, FLORIDA -

(WFLX) - A 42 year-old Fort Pierce man is dead after a backhoe accident in Port St. Lucie on Wednesday morning.

The operator of the machinery was clearing vegetation along a canal bank when the bank gave way.

The backhoe flipped, pinning the victim underneath in about 6 feet of water.

The incident happened at approximately 10:51a.m. in a rural area north of Orange Avenue and west of Florida's Turnpike on the property of Becker Groves, just south of the Indian River County line.

Law enforcement and emergency workers are on the scene investigating.
